Using the New Fare Box & Swipe Reader
As you climb the steps to board the bus, you'll see the metal farebox located next to the driver. Please put your cash fare into the top of the farebox. Our drivers cannot make change for you, so please have exact change for your fare.
If you have an Omnitrans bus pass, you'll do things a little differently. The next part of this page describes how and when to use the swipe reader and trim unit.
Using the New Fare Box
The most anticipated feature of the new-and improved buses Omnitrans is introducing is the new Odyssey farebox. Eventually, all of the old fareboxes will be replaced with this model.
The new farebox accepts $1, $5, $10, and $20 bills as well as pennies, nickles, dimes, quarters, fifty-cent coins, and Susan B. Anthony and golden Sacagawea dollar coins. It even has special mechanisms to reduce coin and card jams!
The new fareboxes do not make change — nor do Omnitrans drivers so you will need exact change to ride.
To learn more about the new farebox, read this brochure.
Using the Swipe Reader
If
you have a 1-day pass or 31-day pass, use our new swipe reader!
It will save you time and reduce wear and tear on your pass.
The swipe reader is located on the top of the fare box. Insert your pass, with magnetic stripe on the bottom and facing you. Move card in direction of yellow arrows, from right to left. The photo on the right shows how to use the swipe unit.
When to use the Swipe Reader
- With an on-board purchased 1-day pass
If you buy a 1-day pass on board, it is issued by the "trim" unit. You can use the swipe reader for all other boardings that day.
-
With a 31-day, 7-day, or prepaid 1-day pass
On the first use, insert the pass into the "trim" unit on the right side of the farebox. This prints effective dates on the pass. For all other boardings, you can use the swipe reader. The photo to the right shows how to use the trim unit.
